I recently traveled with a group to Panamá for two weeks of Spanish immersion, spending six hours a day one-on-one with a native speaker, and half of those hours were with Sergio. He is a knowledgeable, conscientious, and personable professional who clearly loves what he does, and his enthusiasm made for enjoyable classes that were both varied and stimulating. He initially assessed my abilities without my even knowing it and tailored our lessons to meet me where I was. He then brought me along to a place where I was much more comfortable “living” in Spanish. I am an intermediate level learner so classes consisted primarily of conversations rather than grammar lessons, but he could easily switch from chatting to delivering a clear and thorough grammar lecture whenever one was needed or requested. Our conversations covered a wide range of topics and included many insights into Panamanian culture as we walked around town – Sergio made sure that I reached my goal of 10K steps a day! In addition, he gave me a few writing prompts which stretched my ability to compose an essay on the fly (never a strong point of mine) in Spanish, a good learning exercise for me. We also tried to stump each other with daily enigmas and riddles, which was both fun and challenging. My opportunities to engage with Spanish at home are nearly nonexistent yet, by the middle to end of my stay, hearing and speaking only Spanish for three hours at a stretch seemed entirely natural and comfortable, and a great deal of the credit for that goes to Sergio. He is an excellent instructor and I recommend him highly. You’ll have fun, learn a lot, and make a new friend.
